Ex Libris, MFA Thesis Exhibition
In 2007 my folded book series was part of the culmination of my MFA degree from New Mexico State University. My thesis was an installation where I created my “refuge” out of books, book pages, folded books and yarn. My folded books were that starting point of my thesis and have become much more over the years. They are created from discarded books, books that no one wanted anymore and many of which I “rescued” from the dumpster at the used bookstore in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
My thesis exhibition had three installations and was installed at the New Mexico State University Gallery. One installation entitled Spiral Nemesis had my folded books arranged on a red yarn spiral. The second installation Nautilus at 30 was a red yarn drawn nautilus shell with 30 books arranged in each segment. Each of the books represented a year in my life and the covers had images from that year. The third installation Refuge was a forest with trees, birds, animals, and even a book fort. All of the unfolded books were given good homes at the end of this exhibition.
